What Happens Before A Ceramic Coating Is Applied
Most of the work in a ceramic coating happens before the coating goes on. Here is what preparation involves, which steps every car needs and which depend on your paint.

Ceramic coating preparation means getting the paint properly clean before the coating goes on: a thorough wash, removal of old wax and grime and, where the paint needs it, decontamination and paint correction. Every car needs the cleaning. Not every car needs the polishing.
Preparation matters because a coating is clear and bonds to whatever is there on the day. Dirt, residue and swirl marks left underneath are sealed in, not fixed.
Step 1: Agree What You Want From The Coating
Start with the goal. An owner who mainly wants easier washing needs different preparation from one who wants a deep, swirl-free gloss.
Mention any repaints, touch-ups, existing coatings or recent polishing when you enquire. It changes how the paint should be handled.
Step 2: Look Closely At The Paint
Clean paint in good light shows what it really needs. Swirls, water spots, haze, chips and old repairs all become visible.
Some of what turns up is not a detailing problem. Peeling clear coat, rust and deep damage need a panel shop, and a coating is not the fix for them.
Step 3: A Thorough, Safe Wash
Loose dirt and road film come off first, with a pre-wash and a careful hand wash. Clean tools matter here, because any marks added during preparation get sealed under the coating.
In Hawke's Bay, that wash might be lifting orchard dust from a car on the Heretaunga Plains or salt film from one parked near Marine Parade. Both need to be gone before anything goes on.
How Bay Does ItBay's Professional Ceramic Coating includes a wash and paint preparation before the coating is applied by hand, all done at your home or work.
Step 4: Remove Bonded Contamination
Some contamination survives a normal wash. Iron particles, tar and other bonded grime can leave the paint feeling rough even when it looks clean.
Iron decontamination dissolves the iron, and a clay bar lifts what is left. Clay can leave light marring, so it should be used when the paint needs it, not out of habit.
At Bay, iron decontamination and clay are extras Niah or Ben quotes for your car, on top of the Professional Ceramic Coating.
Step 5: Decide On Paint Correction
Correction uses a machine polisher to level a very small amount of clear coat and take out swirls, haze and light scratches. It is how you get the best possible finish under the coating.
There are three common paths:
- Clean and prepare only, for paint already in good shape
- A light polish, to lift the gloss and reduce lighter marks
- Deeper correction, for heavily swirled paint where it is safe to go further
Paint correction is custom quoted by Niah or Ben, because no two paint jobs need the same amount of work.
Step 6: Final Surface Clean
Polishing oils, old protection and fingerprints are cleaned off so the coating bonds to bare, clean paint. This step is short, but it matters.
Step 7: Application In The Right Conditions
The paint needs to be dry and the conditions suitable for the product. Rain, wind and blowing dust all matter when a coating is applied at your home or work, so it is worth talking through timing and where the car will be parked when Niah or Ben gets in touch.
Can A Coating Go On Without Polishing
Yes, if the paint is clean, stable and already looks the way you want it to. Polishing is about improving appearance, not a requirement for every car.
Skipping the wash and preparation is a different matter. That part is never optional.
Does A New Car Still Need Preparation
Yes. A new car can arrive with transport film residue, dealer wash marks, water spots and grime from sitting in a yard. It may need less work than an older car, but it still needs a proper wash and preparation.
Whether it needs any polishing depends on what the paint looks like once it is clean, not on how many kilometres are on the clock.
Why You Cannot Just Coat Over Wax
Wax and sealants sit between the paint and the coating and stop it bonding properly. The result can be patchy and short-lived. Any old protection has to come off first, which is part of why preparation takes the care it does.
What To Do Before Your Coating Appointment
- Do not apply a fresh wax or sealant in the days before
- Clear personal items out of the car
- Tell Niah or Ben about repaints, touch-ups or previous coatings
- Hold off on any DIY polishing or scratch removers
