What Is Paint Correction And Does Your Car Need It
Paint correction is machine polishing that removes a tiny layer of clear coat to take out swirls, haze and light scratches. Here is what it fixes, what it cannot and who needs it.

Paint correction is a machine polishing process that removes a very thin layer of clear coat to take out defects like swirl marks, haze, light oxidation and some scratches. It changes how the paint reflects light, so the gloss comes back for real rather than being filled or hidden for a few washes.
Your car may benefit if the paint looks dull or swirled even when it is clean. It may not need it if you are happy with the finish, or if the damage is too deep to polish out safely.
What Paint Correction Can Improve
- Swirl marks from washing and drying
- Fine scratches that sit in the clear coat
- Haze and holograms from poor polishing
- Light oxidation on suitable paint
- Some water spot etching
- Paint transfer and light scuffs
Results vary from panel to panel. A scratch that catches your fingernail or shows a different colour underneath is much less likely to polish out.
What Paint Correction Cannot Fix
- Stone chips
- Dents
- Scratches through the clear coat to the colour or primer
- Peeling or failed clear coat
- Rust
- Poor previous repairs
These need touch-up, panel repair or a respray. An honest detailer will tell you when polishing is not the answer.
How Paint Correction Works
Clean And Decontaminate
The paint has to be completely clean first, so the polishing pad does not drag dirt across it.
Check The Paint
The paint is looked over in good light to see what defects are there and what can realistically come out.
Machine Polish
A machine polisher and an abrasive polish cut back the defects, a little at a time. Heavier swirls may need a stronger first step.
Refine For Gloss
The finish is then refined so it reflects cleanly instead of looking hazy in the sun.
Protect It
Corrected paint is the right base for a ceramic coating, if you want to keep the result looking that way.
One Stage Or Multi Stage Correction
A one stage polish uses a single step to balance defect removal and gloss. It suits many daily drivers and gives a big visual lift.
Multi stage correction uses a heavier cutting step followed by refining. It removes more defects where the paint allows, but takes longer and removes more clear coat. Compare the result you are promised, not just the number of stages.
Is Paint Correction Permanent
The defects that are removed do not come back. New ones can, if the car goes back to automatic brush washes or dirty sponges. That is why protection and safe washing afterwards matter.
Be wary of correction that is really just a glaze or filler. It looks great for a few washes, then the swirls reappear.
How Much Clear Coat Does Correction Remove
Very little, and it should be kept to the minimum needed for the result you want. The clear coat on a modern car is thin, so every polish uses up a small amount of it.
That is why correction is not routine maintenance. Better washing preserves the finish. Polishing every year does not.
Why Hawke's Bay Paint Shows Defects
Hawke's Bay is one of New Zealand's sunniest regions. Bright, direct sun is exactly the light that shows up swirls, particularly on dark cars.
Dust from rural roads on the Heretaunga Plains and salt film near the coast also mean cars get washed often. Every wash with dirty tools adds a few more fine marks.
Does Your Car Need Paint Correction
It is worth considering when:
- Clean paint still looks swirled or hazy in the sun
- You want the best finish before a ceramic coating
- You are selling the car and want it to present well
- You understand that deeper damage may remain
Skip it, or keep it light, if you are happy with the paint or if repair is what the car actually needs.
